Rattlesnake Safety
Rattlesnakes are the only dangerous snake to people in the San Francisco Bay Area, but they do not want to hurt you.
Snake bites happen when people accidentally step on them or attempt to kill them. Biting is the snakes last line of defense against predators, such as people. While a rattlesnake bite will really suck, if you seek immediate medical attention, you will recover.
How to stay safe when in outside spaces:
Stay on the trail
Always know where your hands and feet are going
Wear boots and long lose pants when hiking. Never wear sandals or go barefoot when hiking though brushy or grassy areas.
Step on logs and rocks instead of over them.
Be extra alert when moving wood or picking up sticks
Hike with a friend- extra eyes and support if there is an emergency
Do not touch a freshly killed snake. Dead rattlesnakes can still inject venom.
